As many of you know, I am all about helping families and children learn about fishing and the great outdoors. To help supplement the efforts of my guide business, and give back to the conservation community, I volunteer as an Outdoor Educator for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. The program is called Let's Go Fishing! and it is for children ages 8 and up.
Yesterday, a fellow instructor and I had the privilege of joining the kids at camp with the Squam Lakes Association. There were ten children between the ages of eight and nine years old and they wanted to fish! We only had three hours with them yesterday. So after a brief overview, we got right to it.
The kids learned water safety, the buddy system, and the basics of fishing. We covered setting up a rod and reel, casting, baiting a hook, setting the hook, reeling them in, removing the hook, and returning them safely to the water to fight another day. Some of the kids were experienced but others had never fished before. They all had fun and were engaged the entire time. Everyone caught fish.
What a great group! I look forward to returning in August to work with the next set of campers.
